SS1 Student Caught with Bomb in Taraba

A female Senior Secondary (SS1) student of the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Jalingo was on Monday apprehended for being in possession of two grenades.

The school’s security guards, who were conducting checks on the students’ luggage following their resumption for the second term, apprehended the student, simply identified as Blessing.

In an attempt to smuggle the bombs into the school, Blessing, an SS1 student, who joined the school last September, concealed the bombs inside gari and it took the vigilance of the security men to detect them.

Upon the discovery, she was quickly arrested alongside her father, who is said to be a retired Police Inspector from Numan in Adamawa State, while the bomb disposal unit at the police headquarters was quickly called in to detonate the bombs.

The development threw the entire school into pandemonium as staff and students ran for cover when the news of the incident went round the school and it took great effort from the school authorities to restore normalcy to the school.

Confirming the incident, the state's Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Joseph Kwaji, said both the girl and her father were being detained, while investigation is ongoing on the matter.

In a related development, following an industrial action embarked upon by members of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), a conglomerate of several health care associations in the health sector, victims of last Sunday's bomb explosion in Adamawa State have been left unattended to at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola.

Most of the victims, who were brought to the medical facility, were neglected as nurses, laboratory attendants and other auxiliary members of staff were not on hand to assist the doctors who had been attending to some of them.

A source in the hospital told THISDAY that most of the victims had been referred to other hospitals outside the state, where they could possibly be attended to by medical experts, as the doctors at the medical centre were overwhelmed by the number of the injured. 

Efforts to speak with some of the injured proved abortive as security men prevented journalists from moving close to their wards.

A blast suspected to be from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) had on Sunday claimed two lives in Dahlehi community in Maiha Local Government Area of Adamawa State, while several others were injured.

The Chairman of the local government, Alhaji Mohammed Jibrilla, had said the incident occurred when some youths lit fire to warm themselves because of harmattan cold but mistakenly added a leather object they picked by the roadside containing a strange object.

Jibrilla said the leather object suspected to be an abandoned IED had exploded, killing two of the youths and injured several others.
